School’s out and there are six weeks ahead of many of us with little ones to entertain. So, here are my 5 top picks for filling those days with some goodness. These activities that will not only have your little ones thinking you are the best but will also be doing a little good for the world.
1. Family Volunteering
This little beauty, Family Volunteering Club, popped up on my insta feed. A brilliant initiative that enables families to volunteer together. They are running sessions in both Stevenage and Lambeth & Southwark over the summer and into September.
2. Borrow Don’t Buy
You can find a whole host of items to make your summer days full of fun through your local Library of Things. From silent disco kits to camping equipment each Library of Things has a host of items that you can borrow for a small fee. Offering you a great way to try new activities whilst reducing the cost and cutting down our consumption. Ethical Consumer provides a great Directory to help you find your local place to borrow. I am delighted that our, Letchworth Garden Shed, opens on 2nd August.
3. Get Cleaning
If you are heading off to spend time on the beach this summer, participating in a local beach clean is a brilliant way to bring a little goodness to your trip. Beach Clean’s website helps you to find one near you. No organised clean near you? Keep it simple. Take 10mins of your days to go on ‘beach rubbish hunt’ and pop it in the bin. No need to be heading to the beach, a rubbish hunt can be done wherever you are.
4. Charity Shop Finds
Charity shop shopping is a firm favourite in our house, and they can be a brilliant source of games and activities for the whole family. If your local selection isn’t up to much or you are looking for something specific, head online. Our local Garden House Hospice sells items online through Depop and eBay, Oxfam has a fab range of used games and puzzles and NSPCC has curated a summer shop.
5. Join the Inflatable Amnesty
If like us, you have caved and purchased an inflatable paddling pool to keep the kiddies cool during the hot days, then it is also likely that you have had one burst. A while back I discovered this awesome organisation, We are IA who can turn your broken inflatables into brilliant bags. Since 2010 they have recycled 700 tonnes of inflatables. So, if you find your paddling pool is no longer fit for use and can’t be repaired, consider sending it their way. You can check what they take here. You could even try your hand at sewing your own using their great tutorials.
So that’s it, just a few options to get you started. I am sure there are millions more. I would love to hear what you get up to and want to wish you all a good summer x
